Hobart is a beautiful city with an increasing number of cute places to see and be seen.
One of the things we don’t have so much of is the village-feel that comes when enclaves emerge in bigger cities. Western shore cafes and restaurants have populated along our commercial strips: Salamanca, the CBD, North Hobart.
There are a couple of exceptions: Landsdowne Café and Paesano’s have had this effect in West Hobart.
Now off the main drag of North Hobart, away from the hustle and bustle of Elizabeth Street, you can find a sunny corner and excellent coffee.
This is exactly the feel that Sydney-sider Marko Genaris wanted to recreate in his first Hobart venture.
The Newdegate Street site has been crying out to be put to good use for more than a decade. When it recently became available Marko knew the time was right and locals have embraced the village feel the café has created, ‘it’s great to get to know people, become part of their routine, and maybe brighten up their day,’ says Marko.
Providence has certainly brightened up This Girl’s day with seriously the best coffee I’ve had in Hobart. Yes, that’s a big call but to all the passionate coffee drinkers out there give Marko’s coffee a go.
Marko reckons a good coffee is part how it’s made, but it’s also dependent on a great roaster, and he swears by Ian the Disco Goat. The Two Girls don’t know if Ian is a bit of ninny or likes to shake his groove thing while he roasts, and we don’t care. He knows what he’s doing.
Providence has an all-day menu that includes a good selection of breakfast on-the-go items which is lacking in Hobart cafes.
Their baked omelette with chorizo, potato and fetta is de-lish, a perfect size and cooked to perfection with a side of lovely toasted pide bread for $14.50.
They have smashed eggs on Turkish or sourdough that start at $8 and extras from $3. One Girl has tried them with haloumi and mushroom as her start to the morning.
Providence has a modest selection of cakes and biscuits to pair with your coffee if you’re not after a meal. The Two Girls can vouch for the Lemon Yoghurt Cake, seriously yummy. We couldn’t get enough of that icing!
Providence is already proving popular with locals. We definitely recommend taking a walk off the main road and trying something new. Go check them out.
