5 Must-have coffees in Hobart’s CBD
Coffee, coffee everywhere, as much as you
can drink.
The Two Girls proclaim Hobart as
Australia’s, if not the world’s, coffee capital.
Here’s five places we love for coffee in
no particular order.
1. Atlas Espresso
Walking through Hobart’s bus mall on any
given business day you’ll often meet a queue spilling out of the doorway
waiting for their morning caffeine hit.
Don’t be put off by the crowds, consider
it a sign of good things to come. And don’t be too concerned about the wait.
Atlas Espresso churns out the coffee. With three people working the coffee
machine, one pulling shots, one steaming milk, the third pouring the coffee and
handing you your beverage, they make between 500-600 coffees a day, sometimes
up to 100.
This Girl loves loves loves their coffee
and my regular includes the best Monte Carlo in Hobart. They know their customers by name.

2. Westend Pumphouse
The Lovely Deputy does coffee here most
days and is a Saturday morning regular and why not? The coffee quality is
consistent and it’s a great space.
Find them at 105 Murray Street.
They’re open Tuesday – Saturday, 8.30 am
– late and Sunday and Monday 8.30 am – 4.00 pm.

3. Pilgrim
Discovered en route to the Royal Hobart
Hospital one morning, Pilgrim is now another regular. There are no bad coffees
here as evidenced by the constant stream of regulars.
Through its Liverpool Street entrance, Property
of Pilgrim, you’ll find a tremendous brunch menu. I so reveled in my French
toast brioche in a violet crème anglaise and Pilgrim potpourri (freeze-dried
berries) that I promised Chef Christian Ryan my first born.

4.45 pm and Saturday – Sunday, 7.00 am – 3.30 pm.

4. Jackman and McRoss
Your morning coffee is determined by your
schedule. There was a time I was in the Jackman and McRoss vicinity a lot. Not so
much these days but when I do drop by I know I can rely on the coffee. There’s
plenty to eat too with BIG serves of practically everything. Dark corners in an
out of the way location are perfect for clandestine encounters. Just an
observation.

5. Villino
Villino is a Hobart coffee institution. They do seriously good coffee
and sell a range of baked goods sourced from Zum and Manna Bakery and some they
make themselves. Café Manager Ellie is warm and welcoming and it’s the sort of
small café This (klutzy) Girl gets a little nervous in. More big crowds of
devotees at Villino.

They’re open Monday – Friday 8.00 am – 4.30 pm and Saturday 9.00 am –
3.00 pm.
5 a. Kara
This Girl has a soft spot for Kara. It’s
long standing and it’s the place the Lovely Deputy and I go every other morning
for coffee and an awesome muffin. It’s convenient and they know us. We’re part
of the furniture now. It’s like our public love shack. But don’t let that put
you off.
They’ve also got a sustainability and
locavore bent.
We like the experience as much as the
coffee.
