Living and Loving Hobart:: 5 off-the-CBD circuit coffees

There’s plenty of good coffee outside of the Melville-Argyle-Salamanca-Harrington ring-road.

Here’s five off-the-beaten track places we love for coffee in no particular order.

Capulus is a hole in the wall type coffee shop with a difference. While they only serve in take-away cups, if you want to sit and drink your coffee, you can. Out front seated on a milk crate or in the space behind the café shared with Bespoke Hair.

They’re open Monday to Friday, 6.00 am – 4.00 pm and Saturday, 7.00 am – 12 noon.

Sometimes you just want a coffee to go, you’re in a hurry, you can’t find a park, or it might just be cold, Tassie morning, Bridgewater Jerry, cold.

Gioconda drive-thru coffee has opened on Main Road, Moonah (between Hopkins and Fleet Streets).

Good coffee is a big deali n Moonah. The options are limited. Now you can get a great coffee without getting out of your car.

They are co-located with Excellente Dry Cleaning at 131 Main Road, Moonah.

They’re open Monday to Friday, 6 am – 2.30 pm and from 7 am Saturday.

Pretty much the entire Eastern Shore knows about Aproneers, but on the other side of the Derwent River we can get a little stuck.

Café and grocer, Aproneers prides themselves on sustainable, local and ethical product.

They’re keeping the food miles low, sourcing up to 90 per cent of what they use and sell within 50 kilometres of their premises. Some of it is grown in Lindisfarne backyards.

They do really good Villino coffee.

One of the things we don’t have so much of is the village-feel that comes when enclaves emerge in bigger cities. Western shore cafes and restaurants have populated along our commercial strips: Salamanca, the CBD, North Hobart.

Off the main drag of North Hobart, away from the hustle and bustle of Elizabeth Street, you can find a sunny corner and excellent coffee.

You’ll find Providence at – 42 Newdegate Street, North Hobart.

They are open Tuesday – Friday 7am to 3:30pm and Saturday 8am to 4:30pm.

North Hobart’s stand out is Berta. In this thriving café you might find yourself feeling just a little smug to get a seat. It serves up got good coffee. But even if it didn’t, This Girl would still be there with bells on because the food is gorgeous.

Seriously, I still think about the Gingerbread hotcake, caramelised quince, pecans and vanilla creme fraiche.

This is when we discovered Berta.
