Greenstore is a quaint combination of café and grocer, run by Kathy and Gary. They previously ran another Greenstore on the Eastern Shore. Back then, it was literally a green store because of the colour of the building. They did sell some organic produce but decided to fully embrace the green lifestyle when they opened the New Town store.
This Girl got the good oil from Kathy on the Greenstore.
Kathy fondly remembers the day she found the space, sitting out in the car park, wondering if she’d take the location on or not. Within five minutes she had said yes!‘New Town is a great place, a really lovely area with people who know about good food, know what they want and know good drinks’.
Kathy and Gary source really locally! They have their own garden out behind the carpark that supplies their kitchen and they also have some locals that bring in home grown herbs for them to use.
The café is a lovely place to enjoy a relaxing meal, you never feel rushed. They serve good coffee, all day breakfasts and have a fine selection of sweet treats in their display counter. They even have a nook where you can sit with a coffee when the café section is closed.
The Two Girls reckon their café prices are quite reasonable given that they are serving up all organic and ethically produced foods.
The Two Girls are fans of their quinoa bread that you can add to your café meal for a small additional charge. They also sell it in the grocer section to take home. The Other Girl asks for a variation on the menu when she stops in for breakfast, a poached egg and avocado on the quinoa bread. Some cafes won’t vary their menus, these guys are pretty flexible.
Their deli counter is full of pre-cooked goodies, salads and deli meats. You can also grab some of their hot take-away options like their 'toasties to go' on turkish pide, 'burgers to go' and amazing duck fat chips (which are super thick cut). They do the final second cook to order and serve with your choice of sauces. Kathy and Gary were lovely enough to shout this girl a serve and I can vouch for their deliciousness.
Apart from being the idea’s man behind the duck fat chips, Gary is also the gluten free guru, so if you have any questions he’s your man.
Kathy filled This Girl in on the history of the building. When she was a child it was a grocery shop with a big beautiful Blackwood counter. After that it was a Quick Sew store before the home of Manna Bakehouse (now located in Springfield Avenue).They totally gutted the building but they left the pressed tin ceiling. They have a small section that offers outdoor dining for Greenstore customers beside the entrance to the retro clothing shop, housed in the cottage next door.
Kathy and Gary have been in the business for 15 years and consider themselves very lucky and happy with the popularity of the New Town Greenstore. What they love most is the interaction with the customers.
They are open Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 6:00pm and Saturdays, 7:30am to 4:00pm.
