Dumpling World
Cheap Eats in Hobart
In search of a cheap eats, I took the lovely Cathy to Dumpling World. It helped that they’re listed in the Entertainment Book. They needn’t be. They totally qualify on the price criterion. All mains are under $20 and bonus, it’s possible to get a small starter and a main and still get small change.
The Two Girls introduced our hunt for cheap eats here.
So how did they fare on our cheap eats criteria?
The meals are filling, tasty and aesthetically pleasing.
For mains we ate: Mix stir-fry noodle, $16.30 and Kong pao chicken and rice, $16.30. As mains they were on the larger-side of dinner-sized serves. They were tasty dishes full of meat, seafood and vegetables. There’s not a lot of magic practiced on plating up a stir-fry but neither was it slopped on.
Another option is to go with a couple of starters - try the pan fried dumplings and a BBQ pork bun for less than $15.
The main is served with some ethics.
This is a free-range free zone. Disappointingly, in search of cheap eats it seems something often has to give. We asked and if everyone asks, then who knows? Love might find a way.
There’s a modicum of comfort.
Dumpling World is a casual restaurant. You have to order at the counter, collect your own cutlery and if you’re ordering starters, they bring your plates out in no particular order. It’s fluro lighting and your choice of condiments. There are Chinese ornaments and lanterns and they keep the Christmas decorations up all year round. It’s clean and efficient and there’s another upside, you can buy a beer or piccolo of wine.

Dumpling World is the right fit for a quick dinner out before a movie or the theatre. It’s the dinner you have when you’re short of time and you’re heading to your destination not the destination itself. Choose red meat or veggies for ethical eating until they change their product supply.
